A hungry baby macaque throws a fuss when its mother won’t let it nurse, and this footage catches the whole back-and-forth. The clip was filmed by Top Macaques at a spot with stone paving and temple-style pillars, likely in Southeast Asia, where troops of long-tailed macaques often live around old shrines and courtyards.

The baby is small enough to fit in two cupped hands, with the dark, thin fur typical of a very young macaque still weeks from its adult coloring. At one point it presses itself against a wooden support post, gripping on while it looks around, seemingly unsettled and looking for its mother.

Why would a mother macaque refuse to nurse?

Mother macaques don’t nurse on demand every time a baby fusses. Sometimes they’re resting, moving to a new spot, or simply managing how often a baby feeds as it grows. To the baby, though, a delay can look and sound like a full-blown crisis.

In this footage, the baby’s frustration is obvious. It roots against its mother’s body, paws at her, and lets out the kind of open-mouthed calls that macaque infants use when they want attention right away.

Does the baby eventually get to nurse?

Later in the video, calm returns. The mother sits down on a bed of dry leaves, folds the baby into her lap, and lets it settle in against her chest to feed. Other adult macaques rest and move nearby, part of the same group sharing this leaf-covered ground near the temple structures.

It’s a small, ordinary moment of monkey family life, the kind of push and pull between a demanding infant and a mother on her own schedule that plays out constantly in troops like this one.
