A baby macaque only one day old grips her mother’s belly fur with tiny pink fists, dark hair still standing up in wild tufts across her head. Her name is Bessie, and this footage captures her very first day of life at a wildlife park.

Newborn macaques are almost entirely helpless at birth. They cannot walk, cannot feed themselves, and depend on a strong grip to stay attached to their mother as she moves, sits, and grooms. That grip is exactly what the camera catches here — Bessie’s fingers curled tight around fur, her face pressed close against her mother’s body for warmth and safety.

What does the footage show?

Early on, Bessie’s mother sits on a stone surface, cradling her against her chest while other members of the troop rest nearby among trees and rocks. Later shots show Bessie pressed low against her mother’s leg, one small red-pink hand reaching out as she shifts position.

In between, the wider troop appears calm — one adult grooming another while a third macaque watches close by, a reminder that newborns like Bessie grow up surrounded by a busy social group, not in isolation.

Why does a newborn monkey look this way?

Bessie’s skin appears pink and her face still looks slightly swollen, typical of a macaque in its first day or two of life before fur fills in and coloring settles. Her exaggerated expressions — wide eyes, an open mouth — are common in very young primates still learning to use their face and voice.

For scale, at this age a baby macaque would fit comfortably in two cupped hands, weighing only a few pounds (around 1 to 2 kg).

Where was this filmed?

The footage comes from a wildlife park, where macaques live in a semi-wild troop setting among rocks, trees, and open stone walkways, giving viewers a close, natural look at family life just hours after a birth.
