A newborn monkey, no bigger than a house cat, lies on a purple blanket with its mouth wide open, crying out because its milk is late. The footage follows caregivers as they calm the infant and finally get the bottle to its mouth.

What does the video show?

""

The baby monkey has sparse, pale fuzzy hair and wide dark eyes that are still adjusting to the world around it. In the opening shots, it lies on its back on a soft purple blanket, limbs curled in, letting out a loud, open-mouthed cry.

Its skin looks thin and slightly pink, typical of a very young primate who hasn’t yet grown a full coat. Small scrapes or marks are visible near its face, and its whole body trembles with the effort of crying.

How do the caregivers respond?

A pair of hands gently cups the infant’s head and neck, steadying it while it continues to fuss. The handling looks careful and slow, the kind of support you’d give to something fragile enough to fit in two palms.

Soon after, a small bottle appears, and the baby’s cries settle as it begins to feed. Its eyes stay fixed on the person holding the bottle, and its small hands grip at the air and at the fingers nearby.

Why does a newborn monkey cry like this?

Crying is one of the few tools a newborn primate has to signal hunger or discomfort before it can do much else for itself. In this footage, the crying stops almost as soon as feeding starts, suggesting hunger was the main driver behind the distress.

By the end of the clip, the infant is calm, fed, and resting against the same purple blanket where the video began.
