A newborn monkey, still fuzzy-headed and small enough to fit in a shoebox, looks straight into the camera with wide, dark eyes that give this video its name. It’s the kind of stare that stops you mid-scroll — still, searching, a little sad.

What does the footage actually show?

""

The baby monkey appears in two settings. In one, it sits low inside a cardboard box, its dark, spiky hair standing up and its pink-gray face turned toward the light. In the other, it’s pressed up close to a set of purple-coated wire bars, gripping them with small fingers no bigger than a child’s.

A human hand appears beside the monkey in several shots, fingers resting near its own on the bars. The contact looks gentle, almost like the kind of reassurance you’d offer a scared kitten — close, careful, unhurried.

Why does the baby monkey look so sad?

Newborn monkeys this young have barely open, oversized eyes relative to their faces, which can read as mournful or startled even when nothing is wrong. Combined with the bars framing its face and the quiet, confined space around it, the overall impression is one of vulnerability.

There’s no indication in the footage of what led to this moment — no visible location, no other animals, no people beyond the hand in frame. What’s clear is just the animal itself: tiny, alert, and watching closely.

A size worth picturing

At this stage, a newborn monkey is roughly the size of a small house cat’s head and body combined — small enough to be cupped in two hands, with fur still too thin to hide the pink skin underneath.
